Jamaica is a country in the Caribbean Sea. It is located south of Cuba, about 150 km to the coast of Haiti.The Capital is Kingston. The surface of the country is 10,99 square kilometres, so if you compar wit a german state is Jamaica almost as large as Schleswighohlstein. If you compare the population it is almost the same,too. 2.6 million people live in Jamaica. Most of them come from Africa. Half of all people live in village. The offical language is English but
Jamaica-Kreolish also named Patois is spoken there, too.
The head of the state is Queen Elizabeth Π. Sir Howard Cook is the Governor-General and Prime Minister of Jamaica is Percival Patterson. Jamaica is divided into three counties, which are also divided into 14 parishes.
Geography:
Jamaica is the third largest island in the Caribbean Sea southern of Cuba.
From the east to the west are 235 kilometres. The coast is 800 kilometres long. There are many hills and mountains in Jamaica. The Blue Mountain Peak is 2256 metres high and it is the highest one there. You can hike for days and there also nice accommodations.
Many cities are located near the coast (as you can see here) . The climate in Jamaica is tropical, the weather is hot.
Only in the evenings it is a bit cooler there. It often rains in the north of the island,because there are rainforests,but In the south it is dryer (trocken).
The Island is rich in plants and animals. There are a lot of trees and palm-trees.
A well known plant which grown there is the banana. There are big plantations of them.
A lot of animals especially birds live there, too. Over 200 species of birds can be found in Jamaica. 27 of them are founded nowhere else. One of them is the Doctor Bird,which is the most famouse, because his colours are like the Jamaican flag , the belly is green with a littl bit yellow his tail and his wings are black,but his beak (schnabel) is red
History:
The name of the country comes from the name Xamayca. It means land of wood and water. The name was given to it by the original Arawak people from South America, who first settled there around the year 1000.
Christopher Columbus discovered it in 1494. Columbus used it as his family´s private estate(anwesen). In 1509 the country belongs to Spain and the island was named Santiago. In 1655 the British Admiral William Penn (father of William Penn of Pennsylvania) and General Venables seized the island at this time 3000 people live there. Jamaica was ruled by the British for 200 years. It became the world´s largest sugar exporting nation and produced ove 77,000 tons of sugar from 1820 to 1824. But there were slavery and you could find lots of pirates, too. After that the capital was Spanish town, later it was called Kingston. Slavery was brought to an end in 1834 because there were many revolts(revelirer). But anyway the life of the free slaves were terrible. They had nothing to live. The island was ruled by the Europeans that´s why there were many revolts against the British. Jamaica became independent in 1962 .
Economy:

Bananas are grown and also cannabis. Alcohol is produced there, too.
Tourism is very important for the country.Jamaica is very popular for holiday maker. Tourism makes a lot of money for the country. About 1.5 million tourists visit it every year. Most of them are from North America but also from Europe, especially from Italy and Germany.
Culture:
Jamaica is rich in culture and has a strong global presence. Music and dancing is very popular for the people in Jamaica. The well known reggae musician Bob Marley was born [6. Februar 1945 in Nine Miles, Jamaika; † 11. Mai 1981 in Miami, Florida; .
Other famous people are the sportwoman Marlene Ottey she was born on10. Mai 1960 and shes one of the most successful sprinters in the history of athletics
the musicians Peter Tosh He was one of the founders of reggeas . * 19. Oktober 1944 in Church Lincoln, Westmoreland, Jamaika; † 11. September 1987 in Kingston;
and Jimmy cliff he was involved by the breaktrough of reggeai music now hes 63 years old.
